Does My Last Wishes™ replace a Will, a Power of Attorney or an Advanced Health Directive?
No it does not replace any of these legal documents. You will still need to have a valid Last Will and Testament and make a Power of Attorney and an Advanced Health Directive if you wish to.
Is My Last Wishes™ suitable for anyone of any age to use?
Yes it is. Sometimes elderly parents will need assistance filling in various details and this can be where thoughts or feelings you never knew they’d had will emerge. It can be a lovely time of discovery and remembrance for both of you. At the other end of the scale, assets and legal responsibilities accumulate from the time we turn 18, however thoughts, feelings and experiences are part of our life from a very early age.
My handwriting isn’t very good. What if nobody can read it?
If you really do have handwriting that’s difficult to understand, you may want to ask a friend or family member to assist you. I’d still encourage you to write some of the information in your own handwriting though because in time to come when someone who’s loved you reads your copy of My Last Wishes™ they’ll see a little bit of you on the page – even if it is hard to read.
I don’t like thinking about my death or the death of anyone in my family for that matter. What is the benefit of making my wishes know for my own funeral?
When a close family member dies there are a lot of important decisions to be made within a very short space of time. As a rule it’s a highly emotional time for all the family and making these decisions in a state of grief, and sometimes shock, can be extremely stressful. My Last Wishes™ has been written to help loved ones and friends who are left behind. They have the task of making these decisions if you haven’t already written down your wishes. The last thing any of us want is for family members to be quarrelling over “what mum or dad would have wanted”. My Last Wishes™ takes the guesswork out of future planning so that hopefully your family’s grief may be made a little easier to bear by their burden being lessened by you.
Why is it important for financial details to be recorded?
Some families discuss their finances and others don’t. Even if you’re in a family that does have a rough idea of each other’s financial obligations there is bound to be some information that could be overlooked or is unknown. By recording details of your financial state of affairs in My Last Wishes™ it will make it a lot easier for a family member or executor of your will to contact the various financial institutions, organisations and individuals that you’ve had dealings with.
What health information is covered in My Last Wishes™?
Provision has been made for family records concerning your parents and grandparents, along with brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles. The health record not only allows you to detail your own health background and current status, but you’ll be able to update this section on the Update pages if required.
When I write my Life Story, is there room for me to add more to it?
There are additional pages for you to add to your Life Story, plus you can always put any extra information into the folder. That way it will all stay together.
How often should I update My Last Wishes™?
It’s up to you as to how often you update My Last Wishes™. You may feel that it doesn’t need updating at all, or you may choose to update it every year. If you do an annual update on or near your birthday it’s a good reminder and that way you can make any changes needed from the past year.
Do I have to fill everything in?
No you don’t. It’s completely your choice as to what you record.
Who do I give a My Last Wishes™ Location Card to?
A Location Card needs to be given to a person you trust and preferably the person that you’ve chosen to administer your last wishes.
Where should I keep My Last Wishes™ when I’ve finished it?
Wherever you keep your Will is probably a safe place to keep My Last Wishes™ too. In instances of household emergencies due to fire and flooding for example, having all your important information in the one spot will be invaluable in terms of being able to find it quickly.
